The name of this stone comes from Troia city in Italy. Due to abundance of this stone in Iran, it is widely used in exterior of the buildings. Different travertine are named by their colours such as red, chestnut, lime and beige. Limestone with colours such as ivory and goldish brown which had formed about 600,000 years ago by precipitation in hot mineral springs is softer in comparison to Marble. However, its strength might vary depending on its age and direction of the cutting. This type of stone has a spongy texture and some of the pores might be up to about 1/25 cm in their diameters. Usually these pores are filled up with cements.
The reasons for applying Travertine
1- Acceptable strength
2- Perfect cut and polish
3- Easy extraction due to the fact that these stones are usually found in low slope horizontal layers which are close to the surface and are easily accessible.
4- Since these stones are young (quaternary and younger), they are not damaged by the new tectonic activities due to various phases on orogenic activities on the ground.
5- Beautiful appearance
6- Presence of pores which will help in adhesion
7- Reasonable price in comparison to other stones
Physical and mechanical characteristics
Quality of travertine stones are not similar in all areas on the mine. At some areas, stones have less porosity and are stronger. The colour of the stone is the most important factor in its categorization. Whiter and smoother stones are of a better quality. Therefore, colour, amount of impurities, porosity and the shape of the stone is important in their categorization. Wherever the thickness of the Travertine and the overburden is higher the stone underneath will have less porosity and will have a better quality.
Marbles are metamorphic stones with white, gray and colourful colours. The luster and radiance in these stones gives them a special beauty and therefore they have a special place among luxurious stones.
The conditions for occurrence of marbles: marbles are created from metamorphism of the primary limestones and depending on their degree of metamorphism and growth of crystals can create various decorative stones with various texture and names.
- Marbles can be applied in architecture and sculpture
- Approximately most of the extracted marbles are useful for interior and exterior application in buildings such as stairs, floor, walls and pillars. Others are applies in monuments as well as sculpture.
- The Marble wastes: the waste from use of marble in buildings or extraction shops as well as mills can be applied in making cement, as an ingredient in making lime, and/or any other areas where limestone pieces are required.
Characteristic properties of Marbles: 1- colour, 2- texture, 3- Hardness, 4- Porosity, 5- Solubility, 6- Strength.
Colour characteristic in marbles:
1- The very pure marbles are white and bright
2- The darker colors from light gray to black are created from graphite and other materials containing carbon.
3- Green color is due to presence of chlorite and other silicates
4- Pink appears due to little disseminated hematite and/or Manganese carbonates such as Rodochrisite
5- Yellow and beige colors are due to limonite
